The Census Bureau shows divorce and marriage rates declining
The U.S. Census Bureau strives to be a reliable source of information for everyone. Since the first census of 1790, the goal of the department is to provide accurate data on various aspects of the economy, households ad demographics.
Recent data reveals that both marriage and divorce are in decline.
Ohio rates of marriage and divorce
According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the marriage rate in Ohio declined slightly from 2008 to 2018. The Ohio rate was slightly lower than the national rate. The same trends held true for the divorce rate in Ohio. The good news is that the divorce rate is falling more quickly than the marriage rate. The rates reflect 1,000 women over the age of 15 years of age. For Ohio, the pertinent statistics are as follows:
- Marriage rate of 16.5 in 2008
- Marriage rate of 16.1 in 2018
- Divorce rate of 9.9 in 2008
- Divorce rate of 7.2 in 2018
In 2018, Ohio residents divorced at a rate less than 32 states, and at a higher rate than 17 states. The married rate for Ohio women in the past decade fell less slowly than in many other areas of the U.S.
National rates
Using a different methodology, the Centers for Disease Control put out a report for U.S. marriages and divorces covering the years from 2000 to 2018. The data shows that marriage rates fell from 8.2 per 1,000 of the total population in 2000 to a rate of 6.5 in 2018. The divorce and annulment rate fell from 4.0 in 2000 to 2.9 in 2018.
